District 9

District 9 - out of 5

This is going to be a short review because there is way too much to spoil in this movie if you haven't seen it.

Basically, I thought it was a very interesting idea that was hurt by director/writer Neill Blomkamp's lack of experience as he's only done smaller movies and shorts previously to this film. There's a bit too much juxtaposing going on it seems. I didn't really like any of the characters except the "main alien," but maybe that's what they were going for.

Personally, there's alot of weird stuff that happens in this movie, and instead of being all "Wow, this is a great sci-fi story with an interesting socio-political point," I'm left wondering what they were thinking as using these plot devices to move the story along. I wish they would've found a better way to do just that.

Maybe modern sci-fi just isn't working for me anymore, and I'm not the audience for this movie. Or maybe my expectations were too high going into it after all the critical and fan praise it received.

Either way it's worth a rental, but I'm glad I didn't see it in the theater.
